Three men were shot and killed during an alleged confrontation with the police in an inner city St James community on Thursday morning.

Two of the deceased have so far been identified as Christopher Thorpe and Omar Sawyers, both of Salt Spring, St James.

The police say two handguns were recovered following the shooting.

Reports are that about 5:30 am, the police were on operation in Salt Spring when they were greeted with gunshots as they went to a targeted house.

The police say they took evasive action and returned fire. When the shooting subsided, three men were found suffering from gunshot wounds. They were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The Independent Commission of Investigation (INDECOM) has commenced its investigation.
